Or at least the basic set of packages. For my tests for general audio (in the case I wasn't getting good feedback for mumble), I've been using omxPlayer. any help will be appreciated. We will look into the 4.x kernel, but this might take some time.

When you say disable onboard sound, are you referring to commenting out dtparam=audio=on in /boot/config.txt? a computer with Pulse and a laptop with ALSA). I've attached the HifiBerry to my raspberry pi, then I configured my drivers as given through your link.
